Drawing Out the Plan
Planning your turf layout before cutting or placing rolls ensures a clean, seamless, and natural-looking artificial lawn. Improper planning can lead to visible seams, inconsistent color, awkward joints, and excessive material waste.
Roll Sizes
PGB Turf is supplied in two standard roll widths:
- 15 feet wide (4.57 m)
- 7.5 feet wide (2.29 m)
These dimensions allow maximum flexibility and minimal waste when covering a variety of landscape shapes and sizes.
Pile Direction
Artificial turf has a directional grain caused by the lean of the blades. It’s essential to:
- Install rolls with blades leaning toward the most commonly viewed direction (e.g., toward the house or patio).
- Never mix directions—all turf pieces should be laid in the same grain direction.
How to Use Roll Widths to Plan
This is the step that determines whether your seam disappears or shows. The two edges of a seam are cut differently on purpose — one tight to the stitch row, one away from it — so that a 3/8″ gap forms naturally when the pieces are pushed together.
Measure the Area
Start by measuring the total width and length of your installation area.
Choose Roll Configuration
Pick roll sizes that cover the area efficiently:
- A 30 ft wide yard = two 15 ft rolls side-by-side.
- A 22 ft wide yard = one 15 ft and one 7.5 ft roll. You’ll have a side seam between the two.

Determine the Viewing Angle
Where will the turf be most viewed from? Usually the home, patio, or walkway. Roll out turf so that the grain leans toward this primary angle.
Keep the Grain Direction Consistent
Always align rolls in the same direction. Inconsistent grain direction results in:
- Visible seams
- Color inconsistencies
- Uneven surface texture
Front Yards
Orient blades towards the street.
Backyards
Orient blades towards the house or primary viewing area.
